Types of Dentures

Below are some types of dentures that might be available to you. While conventional complete dentures replace all teeth in your upper or lower jaw after your gums have healed, immediate dentures can be placed right after teeth removal so you do not have to wait for the healing process to finish.

For additional stability, implant-supported complete dentures use dental implants to keep them secure rather than relying solely on your natural mouth structure, saliva, and muscles. If you still have healthy remaining teeth, partial dentures can be used, which feature synthetic teeth on a plastic base supported by a metal framework that attaches directly to your existing teeth.

When Dentures Are Needed

Besides making your smile look better, dentures fix the overall way your mouth functions when some or all of your natural teeth are missing. They provide essential support for your cheeks and lips, which helps reduce the sagging of muscles in your face and preserves your natural appearance.

Without proper dental replacement, missing teeth can negatively affect your speech, chewing ability, and long-term oral health. Transitioning to dentures restores your ability to eat comfortably and speak clearly, preventing the functional limitations and oral health complications caused by missing teeth.

Taking Care of Your Dentures

Dentures are fragile and require delicate handling over a towel or water to prevent drops, and they should never be placed in hot water which can cause warping. When they are not in your mouth, store them in cool water so they do not dry out and lose their shape. You should also maintain a balanced diet and clean all parts of the inside of your mouth daily by gently brushing your palate, tongue, and gums to increase circulation and eliminate plaque.

Thoroughly clean your dentures daily by rinsing them and brushing with a soft-bristled brush or denture brush using an approved denture cleanser. Avoid regular toothpaste or hard bristles that can scratch the material and leave them more susceptible to stains. Finally, ensure you visit the dentist regularly so we can check the fit of your dentures, ensure your mouth is functioning correctly, and look for any early signs of oral diseases.
